Waste Reduction
Zimmer utilizes new technologies for cutting metal bar stock to maximize the amount of the bar used as part of the product. Automated application of polishing compound is used to significantly reduce compound waste compared with manual application. We are using near net-shape forgings, castings and bar stock to reduce processing time and waste generation.
Packaging Reduction Initiatives
We seek to reduce the amount of packaging material where possible without compromising the integrity of our products. We have eliminated the use of heavy metals in printing ink and reduced the amount of printed cartons and materials. We use non-toxic materials in order to reduce toxic emissions during incineration. We are increasing the use of recyclable materials and include plastics identification symbols on our packaging.
Emissions Control
Control devices are in place for the capture of dusts and other contaminates to protect the environment and our employees. Greenhouse gas emissions are being reduced through energy conservation practices.
Reuse, Recycling, Reclamation
The metal shavings that are generated by our machining processes are sold for reuse. A process for removing oil from shavings has been introduced to increase the value of shavings and to increase the reclamation of oil. Filters are used to extend the life of oils, coolants, and acids. Sludge and dust from ventilation systems for metal polishing is sold for reclamation of metals. Cardboard, office paper, and aluminum cans are collected for recycling where feasible. Excess metal from casting processes is returned to melting pots for reuse. Foam from sewing operations is recycled into carpet padding material.
Energy Savings
Ongoing practices applied to reduce electricity consumption include improved lighting, use of energy efficient motors, and the conservation activities of employees. We have installed automatic controllers to improve the efficiency of our HVAC systems.
Water Use
The installation of non-contact water cooling systems helps to reduce water contamination and are discharged to streams instead of sewer systems when possible. Cooling towers and closed loop water systems are installed to reduce water use when appropriate. We also use evaporators to reduce the amount of water discharged to publicly owned treatment facilities when feasible.
Outreach
Sites are encouraged to identify and participate on local environmental based committees and school education programs. We have sponsored environmental exchange seminars and support community Environmental, Health, and Safety related activities.
