Residents and Fellows Educational Programs

Residents

Zimmer offers a number of educational and career development programs for orthopaedic residents. Most notably, the National Orthopaedic Resident Program is a three-day seminar designed to give residents a current overview of subjects relating to fracture fixation, total hip replacement, and total knee replacement. Participants have the opportunity to interact with the surgeon faculty members during discussion sessions and hands-on workshops. The program includes a tour of Zimmer in Warsaw, Indiana, for a first hand view of the design, manufacturing, and testing processes involved in the production of orthopaedic implants. The three-day seminar is typically in August each year and held in Chicago, Illinois. Zimmer also supports residents through educational and research grants. Other programs include book donations, local hands-on workshops, speakers for grand rounds, and local resident education. Resident Program

Fellows

Zimmer sponsors development programs for orthopaedic fellows, including national fellows seminars covering topics such as fracture fixation, total hip and knee arthroplasty, and treatment of conditions affecting the hand and upper extremities. During discussion sessions and hands-on workshops, participants have the opportunity to interact with key members of the internationally-known surgeon faculty. Fellows Program

National Residents' Course

In this three-day course for residents, the participants travel to Chicago, tour the Zimmer Warsaw manufacturing plant, and attend didactic and sawbones labs on hips, knees, and trauma while learning from a strong faculty from around the country.

Fellows Meetings

This program was designed to further the education of fellows, moving beyond topics covered at the residents course into more difficult cases and revisions. Whether on trauma or joints, we make the most of a renowned faculty from a Medical Education Course for practicing physicians and apply it to these courses where the residents can sit shoulder to shoulder with some of the leaders in their field. Length and content of these courses may vary, but the fellows can augment the education opportunity by attending the associated advanced Medical Education Course for practicing physicians.

Board Review Course

This program was designed to help residents achieve their top priority using their board exam. An educational grant was made to the John Hopkins University to help defray the registration fees for their Board Review Courses so that residents can more readily attend. The Zimmer sales force assists in promoting the course to residents by distributing brochures.

AOA Awards

The AOA-OREF-Zimmer Resident Leadership Forum identifies young orthopaedic leaders by recognizing their accomplishments to-date and by giving them an opportunity to further develop their leadership skills. This two day event introduces the concept of leadership to young orthopaedists and asks them to think critically about leadership and how they can apply it to the specialty. Attendees leave the course with a new sense of responsibility to the orthopaedic community and access to a Community of Leaders. Sponsor donations cover the cost of the course, the resident and/or their department is responsible for travel and lodging. Speaker's Bureau

An arm of the program for practicing physicians, the purpose of this program is to help facilitate the education of residents and fellows via exposure to a wide range of orthopaedic theories and philosophies presented by guest speakers in their own teaching institutions.

Mobile Learning Center (MLC)

Teaching bioskills to residents is an ideal application for this classroom on wheels. The MLC travels around the country all year, and can be made available to teaching institutions when in the area.
