VerSys® Hip System Porous Hip Prostheses
For physicians who favor a porous philosophy for implanting hip prostheses
without bone cement, Zimmer offers several options, each designed to help
the surgeon achieve appropriate joint stability. In this approach, a rasp is
used to create the shape of the implant within the femoral canal. The rasped
shape is slightly smaller than the implant itself. When the implant is
inserted, a "press-fit" is achieved. The porous surface allows natural bone
then to grow into the implant to provide secure fixation. Fiber metal mesh
or beads are two porous surface options that are strategically placed on the
implant to allow for fixation at key areas-top, mid-stem, or overall
fixation.
The VerSys MidCoat Hip implants, with fiber metal mesh or beads, provide
fixation at the top of the prosthesis and use cutting splines for
rotational stability at the bottom. The VerSys FullCoat Plus implants,
with beads, provide fixation from top to bottom. The physician (with the
patient) will decide whether overall fixation or fixation at the top of
the hip prosthesis is appropriate for each patient's individual situation.
